Caney’s series takes inspiration from old family photo albums to create realistic and vivid portraits that capture the stories of their subjects; stories specifically common to the human experience. There is, however, an impalpable quality to each piece, an at times tense suggestion of something beneath the scene’s calm surface. That surface is removed in second versions of each portrait, in which those familial tales are connected to mythological tropes through imagery and visual allegories that have persisted through millennia. These dual images examine the way the personal stretches, blends, and distills over time to yield the monumental narratives at the center of so many cultures, as well as exploring visual qualities of depicting the mystical; rendering a scene of fiction and profound truth.
