More about Whit McMahan
Whit McMahan’s lifelong admiration for the Sixteenth President began in childhood. Growing up in the county where Jefferson Davis was born, he often visited Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace in Hodgenville, Kentucky, during family trips. His connection to Lincoln deepened over the years, but his story took a meaningful turn in 1991 when, after growing a beard, he was frequently told he resembled the former President. What began as teasing soon revealed a calling.
More than a decade later, McMahan developed his first in-character speech, which he debuted on July 4, 2003. The following year, he became a lifetime member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters. Over time, he blended his love of music with his portrayal of Lincoln, incorporating show-and-tell elements inspired by Lincoln’s frontier boyhood. He has since brought the President to life for audiences of all ages at schools, senior living centers, festivals, and Civil War reenactments.
McMahan is a three-time first-place winner of the annual Lincoln look-alike contest in Lincoln’s hometown and has portrayed the President in theater, a television documentary, and two period films. More information, including rates and photos, can be found on his website.
His mission, like that of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, is to help preserve the character of Abraham Lincoln “so that it shall not perish from the earth.”
