Flying High 2017

Saturday, June 17
5:00 p.m. at Old Glory Distilling Co.

Flying High is an evening celebrating artists and the works of art of the region. Flying High is Customs House Museum’s preeminent fundraiser of the year, supporting educational and exhibit programming of the Museum. This year’s event promises to be unlike any other Flying High in our history. This year’s theme is an evening is Havana Nights! “Havana Nights” will transport you back to a time when Cuba’s musical golden age flourished.

• Silent Auction – five o’clock • Dinner – seven o’clock
• Live Auction – eight o’clock • Music and dancing to follow

Tickets to this event are $135 for Museum members, and $185 for non-members, and will go on sale in early May.

For one evening, you can revert to Havana’s Tropicana nightclub of the 1950s when the chachachá emerged as a scintillating sensation and the dance rage was quickly absorbed into the American musical scene. Step back to the era when the Buena Vista Social Club was a physical venue that vibrated with infectious mambo and rumba tunes before its name became associated with the musicians who, decades later, revitalized interest in Cuban music in the 1990s.

The Old Glory Distilling Company will offer some new advantages as a Flying High event center. In addition to our regular bar setups, we will offer a special Tasting Bar featuring Old Glory’s specialties available to all attendees. In the spirit of the event’s theme, what could be more appropriate than an outdoor cash cigar bar?

This year’s signature artist will be Billy Renkl, Professor of Art, Drawing and Illustration, at Austin Peay State University. This celebrated artist needs no introduction to regional art connoisseurs. Renkl’s distinctive collages, cyanotypes and paper constructions have appeared in numerous solo and small group exhibitions. His work is represented in many prominent collections, including those of the Tennessee State Museum, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Jule Collins Smith Museum of Art at Auburn University, Kiwanis Club International, and many others.
